#2447 thankful she knows where she lives

Tonight's thankful post is a little bittersweet, and I am looking at the bright side of the situation.

I worked at home today, and it's normal for me to let Mac out in the backyard to play and have treats and run around. This morning she was outside and I heard a noise at the front door. It was Mac! She had escaped the back yard and come around to the front. I am glad she was there, but it worries me that she can get out of the yard. We live on a busy road. She's a smart pup, but what if she gets interested in something across the road? I hate to even think about it.

The dog and I went out to the backyard and I saw a spot that I thought she might be using to escape. There are some really old decrepit boards on the back fence and one of them was busted through. I blocked the space with a wheelbarrow and some rocks, then I texted MT to get some boards so we (he) could repair the fence. I felt pretty good about the effort.

In the afternoon she was outside again and I went out to check on her. Usually when I whistle, she comes running, but she didn't come. I called her name and clapped my hands, still no Mac. I kinda shrieked and went to the front door. There she was, wagging her tail and jumping up on me. Twice in one day!! Dang it!

She and I went back outside and I walked the chain link fence looking for escape routes. She has been doing a bit of digging along the fence, and I saw a space that I think she could squiggle through. Since then, I haven't let her go out by herself. I'll have to keep watch on her until we can secure the perimeter.

In the end, I'm glad she came to the front door, that she knows where she lives, and that she is unharmed.

  1. That's worrisome! y'all need to walk around slowly and check and fix any spots she might use to get out, as I'm sure you're already doing. Can she jump out? She's such an active pup!

I remember Trooper getting out of the fenced backyard when we lived in the duplex in Burley. I think she dug under the gate and Marvin had to drive around trying to find him. At least Mac is smart enough to know where she lives :)
