#2448 thankful: music in the morning

I am reading a book, Think Like a Monk, that is giving me little insights and tips on how to live more calmly and with purpose. I think I might have mentioned this book in a previous post about routines. One of the routines the author (Jay Shetty) talks about is switching things up if something isn't working. In particular, Shetty talks about not immediately checking in on social media when you first wake up and maybe even avoiding the news completely until you've been awake long enough to handle it. LOL

Shetty offered several suggestions for alternate ways to ease into the day, from reading to meditating to listening to music.

My wake-up alarm is on my phone, so the first thing I do in the morning is grab my phone to turn off the alarm. The second thing I *used* to do was check Twitter or Facebook. I don't do that anymore, at least not during the week. I turn off the phone and try to stay off of it until I get in my car. Then I'll get into my Apple Music and choose some fun tunes to listen to during the commute. If I'm working at home, I listen to music at some point during the morning.

I still listen to The Dan Patrick Show (sports talk radio) in the morning both at home and at the office, because sports news doesn't rile me up like regular news, I guess. Listening to music during the commute has made a huge difference in how I feel when I get to the office.

This morning, the song "Wild Flower" by The Cult came on and I was rockin' out. I totally love this song and will listen to it over and over. The opening riff makes me feel happy and energized. Mostly I don't know what the hell the guy is saying, but is that really important? Sometimes it's just all about the joyful noise. When I was looking for the video to share here, I realized I don't recall ever seeing this video before. My image of the singer was completely different. I saw him as an older English guy with scraggly hair and maybe a pot belly for some reason. I really don't know anything about The Cult except for this song and "Fire Woman".  OH! And "She Sells Sanctuary". How could I forget that gem?  I'll be listening to that song tomorrow for sure!

Take a look at the video, if you like. At least listen to the first 15 seconds or so to enjoy the opening riff. You gotta love the '80s!

I'm thankful for Jay Shetty getting me to listen to music in the morning and for Apple Music because it's just awesome.
