#689 a little community service

T is taking a class at school in which one of the requirements is three hours of community service each term. For each of the terms, T and I have volunteered some time to the Utah Food Bank. We go to their warehouse and sort cans from enormous boxes into smaller boxes by category, like veggies, fruit, baking goods, etc.

It's nearly the end of the term and the school year, and he had to do his service project. I contacted the Food Bank yesterday and they were able to put us on the schedule today, but we did not work at the warehouse. Today was the Letter Carrier's Food Drive. All the letter carriers all over the city delivered plastic bags to all the mail recipients in town. People then filled the bags with canned or dry foods and put the filled bags by their mailboxes. The letter carriers picked up the bags when they delivered the mail. Our assignment was to unload the mail trucks of the food and sort the food into the ginormous boxes that would be taken to the Food Bank warehouse, where it will later be sorted like we normally do.

We were assigned to the post office in Cottonwood Heights. That town is pretty much at the complete opposite end of the valley from our house. We had a three hour shift, from 12:30 - 3:30. Honestly, most of the time we spent sitting around waiting for the carriers or other volunteers to come in with bags of food. There were probably about a dozen other volunteers and we all scurried to get the bags of food to throw into the big boxes. We even put a couple of the big boxes together.

I wanted to take a pic when we were actually working, but I was busy working.  We completely filled two of those big boxes with canned goods and another box with boxed goods. And we were only the early shift. I bet the Food Bank got a lot of donations in the afternoon because that's when most of the letter carriers get back to the post office.

It wasn't difficult and I certainly didn't mind volunteering. T will get full credit (as long as he writes a report about his experience) and even though it wasn't much, I feel good about the time we gave today.

Plus, it's always great when I get to spend any time with my son. :)
