#708 shoe fail, pedometer fail and the vacation countdown is ON

For my final post this month, I'd like to make a confession:

I'm really bad at buying shoes for myself.

It's not entirely my fault that the shoes don't fit properly. I have one foot that is about half a size bigger than the other. I've found that the shoe stores frown on people who try to buy a shoe in one size and the other shoe in a different size. They check, you know. So, if I buy a shoe to fit the bigger foot, the other shoe is flopping around like a clown shoe. If I buy to fit the smaller foot, the big foot feels squished in the shoe like Cinderella's stepsister's feet when they tried on the glass slipper.

This is why flip flops or slip-ons are almost always the right answer to my footwear needs.

Of course, flip flops and slip-ons don't work so well when it's winter in Utah and there's several inches of snow on the ground.

Today was a bad shoe day. I have a pair of really cute shoes that I bought last summer. I opted for the bigger size, but I must have gone a whole size bigger because both of the shoes are too big - one by a little and one by a lot. there is a definite gap in between the back of the shoe and my ankle. The result is that I look like I'm a little kid playing dress-up in cute but boring shoes. All day long, every step I took, I heard "thwack thwack thwack". You know that sound. It's the sound the shoes make as they slide off your heel with each step. Very annoying.

I bought some heel inserts. You put them along the inside of the back of the shoe and they are supposed to keep your shoe on your foot. Perhaps the inserts work if the shoe is even remotely close to your actual shoe size.

Shoe fail for me.

And since we are talking about shoes and walking, let me tell you about the pedometer I'm wearing today.

Granite is doing a walking challenge called "Spring into Summer". It starts on June 4 and goes until the middle of July. The challenge is to walk 5,000 steps each day. We got pedometers to count our steps. I decided to wear my pedometer today to see how it works. The problem with mine is that it keeps resetting. At one point today I was up to around 732 steps, and when I looked again a little later, I had like 84 steps. WTH? I don't know how well this is going to work, but I do know that 5,000 steps is a lot! I will wear the pedometer to they gym in the morning. I've been walking a mile every day. Wonder how many steps that will be. I'll let you know.

And one more thing...this time next week, I will be in the jungle in Belize!
