#663 the Quest is over

It's official! The flight has been booked, the reservations have been made. This year, we are going to

Why Belize? MT picked it out because the second largest barrier reef in the world is right off the coast of Belize and MT is anxious to do a little SCUBA diving there. What we learned from last year's vacation is that it's more fun if we break things up a little, so this year, we will be staying in two different parts of the country.

First, we'll stay in the jungles of the Cayo district, near the town of San Ignacio, not far from the border of Guatemala. We'll stay at duPlooy's Jungle Lodge. We will be there for three nights and while we are there, we will go on two excursions. One day, MT will visit the ATM cave, home of the Crystal Maiden skeleton. This is way to strenuous for me (and involves swimming into the cave), so I will not join him on that adventure. I don't think T will go either. T and I will probably go visit some Maya ruins, maybe Xunantunich. It looks pretty cool!

The other day we are in the jungle, the three of us plan to go to the ruins at Tikal. Tikal is in Guatemala and a tour is offered through the hotel. We've discussed it with our travel agent and done a lot of research, and we think it will be safe as long as we are with a group. I feel comfortable with it and I'm really excited to see the ruins there. It should be pretty amazing.

On the fourth day of our vacation, we will fly to Ambergris Caye, an island right off the coast of Belize. (What's vacation without an island, right?) We'll spend seven nights at Pelican Reef Villas. What we like about PRV is that the accommodations are all condos - we'll have a two bedroon condo. It will be nice because there will be a place where we can go to get away from the others a little. I think last year we all kind of got on each other's nerves a bit because after a few days, the one room with three beds that we were in felt a little squishy.

The resort is about two and a half miles south of the town of San Pedro. Remember that Madonna song, "La Isla Bonita"? She fell in love in San Pedro...that's where we are going. Ambergris Caye (Caye is pronounced "key", by the way) is La Isla Bonita. :P

While we are on the island, MT will SCUBA or snorkel probably every day. T and I will hang out at the beach or by the pool. We'll probably rent a golf cart and drive around the island a little; maybe get some bikes and ride around. Hopefully one day we'll go sailing. We read about an excursion to some other Maya ruins that are nearby, but we might be ruined for ruins after Tikal and Xunantunich. Who knows?

What I do know is that we'll be in town for the start ofSan Pedro's Lobsterfest and we are all lookiing forward to that! I looked at a good story about it earlier today, but I didn't bookmark it so I can't find it. But let me just tell you, it looks great. All lobster, all day. Sounds wonderful!

Two of us in the house are excited about the trip. The other one is a teenager who only gets excited about food (he was thrilled at the thought of lobster) and money. I'm hopeful that he will enjoy himself. He has mentioned that he would like to see Maya ruins and swim. I'm confident we'll have both of those requests covered.

I've bought a couple of guidebooks, so as I learn new and interesting facts about Belize, I will share them with you. Here's a little nugget now: the adorable and cheeky Prince Harry recently visited Belize on behalf of his grandmother, the Queen of England. If it's good enough for Harry, it's good enough for us!

As a closing gift tonight, here's a pic of the prince dancing his royal arse off with a Belizean lady.
