#541 a vist with the foot doctor

Today I had my annual meeting with my podiatrist, Dr. B. We get together once a year so he can make sure the gout medicine is working. I haven't had a gout attack since 2007 (knock on wood), so I'd say the medicine is working well.

While I was there, though, I had Dr. B look at something on my left foot that's been bothering me for at least a couple of weeks. On the outside part of my foot, just outside the little toe, I've got a painful thing. I thought maybe it was a callous that had hardened. I've been rubbing it with a pumice stone in the shower and slathering foot cream on it at least once a day. It's smooth and soft, but there's something there that is uncomfortable at best and painful on occasion.

At first Dr. B thought it was a callous. I do have some callous-y buildup there. The more he looked at it, though, the more he didn't like it. There's something on the bottom of my foot, and it's not a wart or and IPD or IDK or something (I don't remember the initials he used.) It's not hard, but it's firm and it hurt quite a bit when he pressed on it.

He instructed me to go to the lab and have an x-ray done on it. His initial diagnosis is a cyst, but he's not sure. He told me to ice it and keep putting lotion on it. He also told me that I needed some new shoes. GRRR!!!! New shoes? Come on! He told me that I'd have to live in cross-trainers, like ALL THE TIME except when I sleep and shower.

I must have had a sad look on my face. I told him that one of my pleasures of the day was taking my shoes off when I got home. He said that I could get another, different pair of shoes to wear at home. He suggested Crocs.

I know that my hands flew to my face and I practically yelled, "I hate Crocs! I make fun of people who wear Crocs!" (Sorry about that Crocs fans, if you are reading. It's true though.) He just smiled (I think he has some Crocs) and explained that I need something with cushion to relieve the pressure on that cyst/thing-in-my-foot.

Thinking back on it now, maybe my priorities are a bit messed up if I'm more concerned about the stupid shoes than the potential CYST IN MY FOOT.

So I guess I'll head back to the shoe store and see if I can find some comfy cross-trainers. I don't know about the Crocs yet, though. I just don't know if I can do it. Dr. B said he would call me if he figured out what the Thing In My Foot is. If I don't hear from him, I should just ice it and elevate it and wear good shoes. If it starts to grow or hurt more, I should go see him. I shouldn't let anyone massage it or try to manipulate it.

MT and I are planning to go to Park City this weekend, and there's a Crocs store there. I'll probably go check it out. I just shuddered at the thought. The following totally sums up my thoughts on Crocs:

I'll let you know how this all goes...
