#646 Olympic flashback - Feb. 17, 2002
OOPS! I forgot to post this on Friday! I am in California visiting my parents and my sister this weekend. Friday we got home late, and I didn't even think about getting online to post my Olympic flashback. This post is kind of short, and we are getting to the end of the Games. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!

The day did not start out very well. I got to the staff shuttle around 12:50 or so. I had a 1:30 shift. Lots of people were there, but there was no shuttle. We stood around until 1:15, then Fran called the VCC (Venue Communications Center) and explained that there were 30 ES (Event Services) people standing around who were supposed to report at 1:30. She asked them to send two vans as soon as possible. It took about five minutes or so, then both vans came. We were all pretty disgruntled about the shuttle situation.
Of course, by the time we arrived, everyone was deployed. I was in Sector South again. I was ok with it, but I was kind of looking forward to working outside today because the weather was very mild. It was good though.
At first I started out in section 133 & 134. They are small sections with no room to stand at the fence, so that was just fine. After lunch, I was at section 129 which was even better because there is only one way up, so there were not a ton of people in the section. It was sold out, so the seats were full, but it was very mellow. That section is right at the turn into the home stretch. It was a great spot. My big thing today was taking people’s pictures. It was a lot of fun!
Also in stands again today was the Dutch band, Little Beers. I can’t remember what it is in Dutch. I’ll try to think of it. Let’s see…Klientje Pils? I know the last word is right! It sounds like St. Chapelle. LOL The Dutch fans have lots of fun. They weren’t as rowdy as they were yesterday because they did not medal today.
Today’s event was the women’s 1000 meters. That is two and a half times around the Oval. There were 18 pairs. There were some fast times posted today, including a new world record by American Chris Witty! She won the gold. Her time was 1:14 something. Very speedy. The former world record holder, a German named Sabine Volker (?) got the silver, and American Jennifer Rodriguez got the bronze. A Dutch skater came in 4th. What a great day for the Americans!
Only four more days of competition at the Oval. We have tomorrow off, then competition on Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday is off, then competition on Friday and Saturday.

Just a quick note about my dad...he is currently in a convalescent facility in Long Beach where he is getting physical therapy twice a day. He's doing really well; he just needs to build up his strength so he can come home. He says he feels good, he's not in pain, and everything seems to be going well. I'm really hopeful that he will keep up his exercises so he can get strong again. Today is my parents 47th wedding anniversary, and I was happy to be here with them to celebrate!
