#874 the February picture

Last month I wrote about the calendar I had made for our parents and I talked about the photo for January. I'd like to talk about the February photo now.

As you can see, it is very dark. There's a lot of light behind us, so the picture didn't come out very well, but if you click on it so it enlarges and peer at it closely, you will see it is a photo of me and T.

Remember a few days ago when I wrote about eating salsa on a sailboat? I wrote that we were on our way to Caye Caulker. This photo was taken at the restaurant where we ate, the Rainbow Grill & Bar.

The restaurant is right at the end of the dock, so our boat pulled up to the dock and we just went right in. Like a lot of places in the Caribbean, the place is mostly open. Those windows you are just open - there's no glass or screens, so the breeze blows in all the time and it feels great.

We had a delicious lunch. T and I both had the shrimp quesadilla with rice and beans. There was also the ever-present cole slaw. Cole slaw was served with just about every meal I had in Belize. I don't remember what MT had, but he thought it was good. We put Marie Sharps hot sauce on everything (and still do! It's the best!) The adults also had a few Belikin beers. T drank Sprite.

Yum! Just looking at this photo makes my mouth water!

If I remember right, MT and I were telling T some of our college stories. Maybe they weren't entirely appropriate, but I'd had several beers by then and we were all laughing and having a good time. After lunch we strolled down the main street on the island - it's just a wide, sandy road.

I love this pic because you can see MT chatting with T as they walk down the street.

We went into a gift shop and bought a few t-shirts and some little souvenirs. On the way back to the boat, we stopped at a tiny little ice cream shop. MT and T predictably had chocolate. I think mine was vanilla with caramel. By then we were all mellowed out and we all took a little snooze on the sail back to Ambergris Caye.

That sums up our time on Caye Caulker. It was a great day and we had lots of fun. Now you may be wondering, of all the pics I took in Belize, why would I include this too-dark-to-really-see-it photo of me and my son.

In the calendar I wanted to have a couple of pics of T and his dad, a couple of pics of T and me, a couple of family photos and a couple of shots of each of us by ourselves. It turns out that I only had three photos (out of about 400 shots) of T and me. One of them is of our backs as we descend a steep staircase at Tikal. This photo in the restaurant is the next best one and the best one is of the two of us at Xunantunich and was taken by the tour guide. You'll see it in a couple of months.

So really this photo is kind of bittersweet for me because I remember that we were having a great time and laughing and joking, but it also makes me sad because it is the only pic I have with T where the laughing and joking is happening.

I think even a really dark picture of a  happy memory is better than nothing at all.
