#2570 today’s best: book club

The best thing about today was my book club meeting. I am a member of #EkpesBookClub. It is a club hosted by former NBA player Ekpe Udoh. (I say former, but there is a possibility he could come back to the NBA, although I think at this point it is doubtful.) Our book club meets on Thursday nights on Twitter. We all use the hashtag #EkpesBookClub to connect with each other and discuss the book. Discussions are usually fun and fast-paced. Typically Ekpe will start us out with a question or comment, then we will reply or start a new thread. We often go off on other topics or respond with GIFs. We “chat” for about an hour and sign off until next week.

Currently we are reading Eternal by Lisa Scottoline. This week our “assignment” was to read to page 152 and the discussion of those first 152 pages was tonight. What made tonight’s discussion extra cool was that the author joined in! This is the second Scottoline book we have read as a group, and she was kind enough to join our chatter the first time, too. She was really excited to have her new novel chosen by  Ekpe.

It is exciting when the author joins in our weekly discussions. It has happened a few times that I can think of, and everybody gets excited. Ms. Scottoline, or Lisa, as I call her, was very generous about answering questions, telling us about her research, and interacting with the group.

I enjoy being part of this group. I think this is my fourth year. We read all kinds of books including some that I haven chosen or would chose to read anyway, to other books that I probably wouldn’t have known about or thought to read. All the people in the group seem interesting and thoughtful, and they all love to read. Ekpe himself is extremely kind and generous. I appreciate that he continues with the club even though this year and last year he played basketball in China. I think he gets a kick out of it, too.

Thursday nights are great because of book club.
