The coolest thing happened to me last night. I was just settling in to watch my guilty pleasure (Big Brother) when the phone rang. A voice from the past...an old dear friend from college was on the line! It was so great to hear her voice. We spoke for 2 hours and it felt like what it was: 2 old friends catching up on each other's lives and ending with a promise to talk again soon.
Here's my confession: I'm a crappy friend. It's been over 2 years since I've talked to this lady, although I have thought about her often. The last time we spoke she seemed so sad. She wasn't happy in her work or in her marriage. I wished for her to find some joy in her life, but I didn't call to learn if she'd found it. She lives in the Midwest and we haven't seen each other in a long time. The last time we met, my son was about 9 months old; he's 9 years old now. Over the years we've kept in touch - usually she's called me - but I dropped the ball and didn't do anything about not hearing from her. Until one day a couple of weeks ago when I "googled" her. I managed to find an email address and sent her a little note. She replied and that's what led to the phone call. I'm not going to drop the ball again. I'll be the one making the next call.
