#134 planes, trains and automobiles OR transportation trouble in So Cal

I took T to my parent's house over the weekend. We arrived, trouble-free on Friday evening. I enjoyed an In-and-Out burger and fries for dinner. I was happy to be there. Saturday was great. Dad decided to buy a laptop computer, so I went to the computer store with him, then we set it up that night. Welcome to the cyber-world, Dad!

Sunday T and I took the train to San Diego to visit my sister and to see a baseball game. That morning at the train station, I upgraded our seats to business class both ways. I remembered that one time Lizzie took the train from Fullerton to San Diego and she had to stand up for several stops before she was able to get a seat. That wouldn't be cool. Business class guarantees you'll have a seat. It was the best $50 I spent that weekend!

The game was fun. It was blistering hot in the canyon we were sitting in. It wasn't a real canyon, but there were big walls on either side of the seats which pretty much stopped any breezes from blowing in. It was a moderate temperature in other parts of the stadium, but not in our gully. I think we all got sunburns. The sunscreen just melted off. So much for sweat-proof sunscreen. Or maybe I was sweating industrial quantities. All I know is that my back got fried. The Braves crushed the Padres, by the way. It was the last game before the All Star game. After the game, we went over to Lizzie's for some snacks and chatting before catching the train to go back north.

A quick side note on the nachos I discussed in my previous post...I did have nachos, but they weren't nearly as good as I remember. But how could they be? I'd had three years to immortalize those chips and cheese, and nothing could really live up to it. Oh, they were tasty, but not scrumptious and I didn't even finish the goods.

Lizzie dropped us off at the Old Town station. Our train was scheduled for 6:30, but it never came. Around 7:00 a man yelled at us north-bounders from across the tracks, "Hey North-Bounders! Your train isn't coming!" Who was he? He was not an Amtrak official. He was vendor who had a private car on the train. We ended up taking the trolley to the downtown station where I changed my ticket to the later train, keeping the business class seats. Good thing, too, because now the late train had two sets of passengers. I'm sure there was some standing in coach. Business class was full, too. We ended up getting home two hours later than originally planned, but it worked out fine. We had a fun day, even though the last part of the train adventure was stressful.

Monday was mellow. We didn't do much. I took a nap. It was good. I was so relaxed that I neglected to print my boarding pass. No problem, I thought, I'll get it at the airport. The folks and son dropped me off at the airport and headed home. I went to the ticket counter. There was a line. By the time I got to the desk, my flight was closed. (There was 15 minutes before it was scheduled to take off.) The lady at the counter told me I couldn't get on the flight and she would book me for stand-by the next day. I pleaded with her, but to no avail. So I did it. I cried. I did! Right there in the Long Beach airport at the Jet Blue counter. I'm not proud of it, but I was so frustrated, I couldn't help myself. I'm not sure if it was my tears or what, but I got on the plane with an admonishment to get there earlier next time. I'm pretty sure I was the last person on the plane, and I was really glad to be there!

I didn't have any car troubles over the weekend, but MT did. His car wouldn't start so he had it taken to the shop where it stayed all weekend. Battery was dead. Wouldn't hold a charge.

I didn't weigh in today. I'll go on Saturday morning. I think I'll be ok, despite the copious quantities of chips and cheese I consumed this weekend. I weighed myself at home this morning and it looks like no harm was done to the diet. I think I'll even have a loss.
