#365 the five beaches of Palm Island

The islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines are in the southeast Caribbean south of St. Lucia and north of Grenada. There are about 20 or so small islands that make up the archipelago. We stayed on Palm Island. It's a private resort - the only thing on the island is the resort itself. The island is about 130 acres. From my room to the other tip of the island was about half a mile. It wasn't even that far across from one side to the other.

There are five beaches on Palm Island. I explored each of them and they were all beautiful in their own way. In the week that I was on the island, I went to each of these beaches and with the exception of the main beach, I was the only person on any of these beaches. Four of them didn't have any lounge chairs by them. They had hammocks. They aren't good swimming or wading beaches because there are lots of rocks or the surf was pretty rough. It was awesome to lay in the hammock and look at the water though. I felt pretty special to be the only person there at the time.

I numbered the beaches myself and came up with the names, so if you go there, don't expect to ask where Dump Beach is. That's just my name for it!

This is Dump Beach, beach number 5. I called it Dump Beach because it was the closest to the dump. Yes, there is a dump on Palm Island and it looks like they burn the garbage there frequently. MT and I stumbled upon the dump and we were kinda put off by it, but it makes sense that there is one. It's really small. Anyway, this beautiful little stretch of beach is just down the road from the dump. I put my feet in the water here and took pictures. There are a lot of grasses that house many lizards. I didn't put my towel down. The water comes all the way up to the grasses, so you don't really want to sit on the beach either. It's just pretty.

I called this beach #4, Pretty Beach. This hammock was one of my favorite places. This picture is just the end of the beach; it's pretty long, but not very deep. What I mean is the water comes up far and there really isn't much place to put down a towel if you wanted to sunbathe along this beach. You also probably wouldn't want to swim here because it's quite rocky. MT did snorkel along this stretch. He didn't see many fish. It's also a little rough. Who wouldn't want to hang out in that hammock, though?! It was awesome!

This is beach #3. I called it Rough Beach. As you can see, it's very rocky. There is a hammock here that was also dear to my heart. I fell asleep in it one day when I wasn't feeling very well. The trade winds gently rock the hammock, and the sound of the waves pounding against the rocks was very soothing. MT thought the snorkeling over here would be good, but it was so rough the day he checked it out that he didn't attempt it. We did other things and he didn't have the chance to come back to try it. Maybe next time.

I called this Swimming Beach. It's beach #2. MT and I went "swimming" in this beach. It was wonderful. There were some nice swells that came in here so you could kinda body surf. Since I don't swim, I have to be able to touch the bottom, but I like to lift my feet up and ride a little wave when it comes in. Although you can see some dark spots here that indicate rocks, it wasn't rocky where we went in. I really enjoyed playing here. We only swam here once. Thinking back, I wish we'd come back here. We were the only people over here and it was lovely.

Here is the reason we didn't go back to beach #2. This is the Main Beach at Palm Island. You can see that it is wide. The sand is beautiful. It's very white with little flecks of red coral in it. It's soft, too. The water is spectacular here. It's shallow and warm. The waves are gentle. This is the beach you see when you arrive at Palm Island. It's truly spectacular. There are many lounge chairs here that you can pull under palm trees for a shady rest, or you can pull the chairs out into the sun for a wonderful sunbath. Plus, the bar is the closest to this beach. There's a lot to be said for a sweet and tasty pina colada while you are hanging out in the sun!

I said there are five beaches on the island and that is true. Here's a bonus picture of a place I called Frank's Beach. It's really an extension of Beach #2, but there's a story behind Frank's Beach. Come back to hear the tale!
