#1221 Wicked in SLC

I've been waiting for so long and today was finally the day I got to see the musical Wicked at the Capitol Theater in downtown Salt Lake City.

I went by myself, although throughout the show I was wishing that I had bought a ticket for T. I know he would have enjoyed it. He's a bit like his grandmother - his first answer is almost always NO - but once you get him out and about, he almost always has a good experience.

Anyway, there I was, sitting by myself toward the back of the theater but right smack in the middle so I had a great view of the stage. A man (and his wife and their adult daughter and her friend) sat next to me on one side. The man and I started chatting and it was pleasant. When the people on the other side of me arrived, the first man asked if I knew them. I said no, that I was alone. He told me that he would be my friend for the show. I thought it was nice.

You know that today was the final of the World Cup and the match was going on at the same time as the play. I did turn my beloved iPhone to airplane mode so it wouldn't buzz and distract me. I checked the score at intermission and then again at the end, so I knew that Germany won. Good job, Germany. Your team was dominant in the tournament.

Back to the show...

I LOVED IT!!

The women who played Glinda and Elphaba were fantastic. They had a wonderful chemistry and sounded great together. Their voices were just spectacular. My friend, the man next to me, was equally in awe, especially of Elphaba. "Defying Gravity" was exceptional and I really loved "I'm Not that Girl" too.

Really, I loved everything about it. It was funnier than I expected, too, and a little romantic. I had been told that the story was hard to follow, but I didn't think so.  (Of course, the person who told me that heard it from her mother who didn't really care for the show, so she probably did think it was hard to follow.) I thought it was clever and charming. I would go again tomorrow night if I could. :)

Here's the review from the Salt Lake Tribune. I think the review is accurate and well said.

What a great weekend I've had!

Must admit stage shows are not my thing, but maybe that is beccause I was not exposed to live shows as a kid. Youa nd your aunt Mia seem to have a connection with live shows. Glad you had a good time.

I will never forget when I saw this show in LA. When Elphaba belts out, "So if you care to find me / look to the western sky!" I think I teared up. The production values at that point in the show were also spectacular. I'm so glad you loved it!
