#1306 traveling for work part 2 OR 9 hours at SMF

Have you ever seen that Tom Hanks movie The Terminal? I lived my own abbreviated version of that movie today.

Remember yesterday I mentioned that I had an early morning 6:30 flight out of Sacramento? I went to sleep at 8:30 last night because I knew I'd have to get up early and I was worrying about oversleeping. None of that happened. I slept well and woke up at 4 AM, took a quick shower and got to the airport by about 5. Got though security, was waiting at the gate when it was announced that there was a problem with the plane's navigation system so the flight would be delayed. The mechanics came to fix it and we were given the all clear. I was actually on the plane when the captain told us to deplane because the system wasn't actually fixed.

By 8 AM the plane still wasn't fixed. I wasn't too worried because I didn't have a connecting flight. We were told the part to fix the plane was coming from Salt Lake or San Francisco and I was willing to wait. The Delta service counter said the flight was delayed until 9 AM. Ok.

Somewhere along the way, though, the flight was just cancelled and I ended up going down to the main ticket counter to get a seat on another flight. The next flight out was at 10:15, but it was already full. After that, the next flight was at 1:50. I got a confirmed seat at 1:50 and I was on the stand-by list for 10:15.  Ok.

I got a chai latte from Starbucks and read until it was time to get back to the gate to see if I could get on the 10:15. I got to go through security again and went to the gate, waiting patiently for my name to be called. It wasn't. I did get the boarding pass for the 1:50 flight and a $20 meal voucher from the airline.

By that time my Nook was running low on battery life, so I found a plug-in table and hung out reading for awhile. I used the food voucher to get a buffalo chicken pizza and a soda, read some more and finally it was time to go.

I was sitting in the boarding area and I heard an announcement about flight 2744 being delayed, I looked down at my boarding pass and it said flight 2744. I nearly cried. But then I realized that my new flight number was something different, (it was my third flight number of the day and maybe I just wasn't reading the pass correctly.) Everything was fine and I got on the plane around 1:30 and I got home at 4:30 (one hour time difference) and I was so glad to get home!

To recap: I arrived at the airport this morning at 5 AM. I finally left the airport at 2 PM. That's nine big hours I spent in Terminal 1 at Sacramento Airport.

Remember the reason I was in Sacramento in the first place was to attend a meeting that lasted five hours. The whole trip ended up taking me about 32 hours.

The upside? (You know I'm always looking for the upside!)

I finished a book! Check out the 2014 Reading Page and scroll to the bottom for the latest book "review".
