#1504 riding on the City of New Orleans

A friend of mine from work, Sheldon, has an interesting and unusual vacation planned for next week. Inspired by the song City of New Orleans, he is going to ride trains across the United States. He'll start here in Salt Lake on Sunday morning and ride to Chicago. In Chicago, he'll board the City of New Orleans train and ride down to, of course, New Orleans. From there he will get on a train to Los Angeles, then ride from LA to Sacramento and from Sacramento back to SLC. The whole trip will take him seven days. He says the five train tickets cost him just over $500. He will have to spend two nights in hotels because there is a lag in between times for a couple of the trains.

He is traveling by himself. He said he did not book a sleeping berth. He's taking his Nook and an atlas and he's going to see America by train. He did say that if he didn't like the first two legs of the trip, he would fly home from New Orleans. :)

I don't know if spending a week on the train is something I would especially like to do, but I think it sounds pretty cool. I can't wait to hear about his trip when he gets back!

If you don't know the song City of New Orleans, check out this version by The Highwaymen (that's Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson.)
