#2227 dog days

I could not write last night. I volunteered at a concert at Red Butte - more on that in a minute. It has been extremely hot here and I was so tired when I got home. Plus I didn't sleep well the night before because we are dog-sitting a giant fellow named Scooby.

Who is Scooby? He is a mixed breed of unknown origins who belongs to my brother-in-law's friend Jeff. Kevin and Jeff are driving across the country to Missouri and Scooby's usual sitter is out of town, so MT offered to help by letting Scooby stay with us. Jeff was told that Scooby is a labradoodle, but I have my doubts. His legs are longer than a lab and his coat is more wiry. His mustache is pretty cute and he has pretty light brown eyes. He's about two and a half years old and very active. Next to him, my sweet little Osi looks like a little old lady. Well, she IS a little old lady.

The thing about Scooby, and really most other dogs, is that he barks. Osi does not bark. Her barking is so rare that it is remarkable when she does let out a woof. Scooby barks indiscriminately. He barks at me when I'm standing in the kitchen waiting for food to cook as if to say, "What's the hold up human?" He barks at me when I'm talking on the phone as if to say, "Yo, human! I got shit to say too!" He barks at me when I'm getting ready for bed as if to say, "Is it time for bed? Are you getting in bed? I want to get in bed! Let me up on that bed!" Worst of all he woofs at me when I am sound asleep. He will walk right up to my side of the bed, where he is face level with my face, and he will woof sort of softly, but enough that it freaks me out and I wake up and yell, usually at MT for agreeing to dog sit this inconsiderate beastie.

I was just about convinced the dog didn't sleep at all, but there he is, all sprawled out on the floor. His eyes aren't closed. I think he's waiting for me to do something interesting.

I don't have work today because it is Pioneer Day, a state holiday in Utah, so I am hanging out at home and relaxing. I did go to a Zumba class this morning. That was fun. MT talked about going for a bike ride in Park City, but I don't really want to. I just finished a book, now I'm writing, then I want to read some more and watch TV. Maybe make an easy pie. For those of us non-pioneers, we sometimes refer to this day as Pie and Beer Day. Everyone celebrates in their own way, you see.

Last night I volunteered at the Nathaniel Rateliff show. The opening act was a group called Lucius. They were excellent and I enjoyed their 45 minute set very much. The crowd last night was huge - a sold out show, which is 3,000 souls at this venue. I worked the east side recycling center and I can tell you the crowd was hungry. My partner Mattias and I emptied many more bags of of garbage that contained food items than cans or bottles. Just an interesting side note, LOL.

Nathaniel Rateliff kind of reminds me of Zac Brown, but a little edgier and with more horns in the band. He was great. I'd been listening to his music for a couple of days and he was even better live than recorded. Most of the audience was standing and dancing and singing along all night.

It's interesting because I had never heard of this guy before, but he has a following and there were lots of people that I saw singing along during the show. It goes back to figuring out and realizing that there are a lot of cool people out there doing cool things, making cool music or whatever their thing is. I hope to be a cool person doing cool things at some point! I really like hearing new music and expanding my horizons. I don't always like what I hear, but I like being able to hear it.

If you have a chance, google Nathaniel Rateliff and give a listen to "S.O.B." or "Cooling Out". The latter song feature Lucius, too.

I'll be back tomorrow with more words. Enjoy your day!

Got my answer about Nathaniel Rateliffe. I remember being surprised that he was white, haha. I’m sure they were great live.
