#2240 weekend wrap-up

Hello Sunday night! Back again so soon? Of course you are.

Saturday was busy as all my Saturdays are in the summer. The first part was the same as pretty much every Saturday for the past couple of months: WW, then RBG for blooms and Courtyard time. I had a chance to walk around the whole garden and it was spectacular. Here is a view on the Four Seasons Garden path. I posted this pic in a few places on social media yesterday. I like the way it turned out.

Here's a quirky little tidbit. The bloom list has all the scientific names of the plants in the Children's Garden. Many of the plants themselves have signs that have the scientific name and the common name, so I will often write the common name on my list, or a description of what the bloom looks like. As you can imagine, there are many "small purple flower" or "tall plant with yellow flower". My descriptions need work. For plants I see all the time, I can usually remember at least the first part of the name and then, using my description, I can find the plant and write the date. I have given some other plants nicknames that help me remember them. For example, Russian sage is called Perovskia atriplicifolia. I call it peristroika and I can find it easily on my list (which is about 20 pages long, by the way). You know the pretty flower black-eyed Susan? I don't call it that. the scientific name is Rudbeckia fulgida, so now I just call them Rude Beckys. I crack myself up. The photo above is chock full of Rude Beckys.

When the docent shift ended, I came home to pick up MT and the two of us went to Utah County to do a bit of shopping at the outlet mall in Lehi. We like to go to the Eddie Bauer and Columbia outlet stores there. I think this might have been the first time I didn't get anything at Eddie Bauer. I wasn't in the mood for a sweater or a tank top which is what they had as the new winter clothes were coming in and the summer clothes were on sale. It probably would have been a good thing to find a couple of end of summer items to take to Mexico in November, but I wasn't thinking of that trip. I'll be okay.

The highlight of the day was watching the Bluebird Cafe concert at the Sundance Resort last night. The featured songwriters were Wendell Mobley, Lee Thomas Miller, and Paul Overstreet. Between them, they were a very accomplished group with numerous Grammy awards and nominations, Songwriter of the Year awards and various country music awards and nominations. In addition, they were good singers and storytellers. Wendell in particular had a great voice and Lee was hilarious. Great comic timing. Paul Overstreet seemed to be the big man of the three, a bit older and with lots of hits that most everyone in the crowd knew and could sing. Here's a photo:

That's Wendell on the left and Lee in the middle listening to Paul tell a story. He had some good ones, too!

Today I mostly wanted to stay home. MT and I went to breakfast and then for a walk. After that I went to the grocery store. I was home by 1:00 or so, then MT and I watched a movie I'd picked up from Redbox called Long Shot.. It has Charlize Theron and Seth Rogan. It was hilarious and sweet and kinda raunchy. I liked it a lot. After the movie I cooked up some taco meat and also made a batch of fried rice so we'd have something in the fridge to eat this week.

What am I looking forward to this week? I have stuff planned for Monday, Thursday and Friday. On Monday night I am volunteering at the Steve Miller Band concert at RBG. I think that will be fun. Thursday night the return of #Ekpesbookclub. Ekpe is in China preparing for the basketball season with his new team and I am excited that he is continuing the book club, at least for now. We are reading The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. It is a short book, only a couple hundred pages and the typeface is large, so even though I haven't started yet (oops!) I plan to be through page 93 by Thursday. On Friday night, we'll go back to Sundance for the final Bluebird Cafe show of the year I'm looking forward to that show. It seems like the last show is always the best.

Other than that, I'd like to get to get to the gym at least once. I'd like to finish a book I've been reading that I have enjoyed very much so far, so I'll let you know how that goes.

Now to finish up this mellow Sunday, I think I will watch an episode of The West Wing so I can listen to the West Wing Weekly podcast tomorrow that talks about the episode I'll watch (season 7 episode 1 if you are interested).

Have a great week. More words on Tuesday!
