This afternoon I watched the new Disney/Pixar movie Soul on Disney+. I’ll be straight up with you: I cried a lot during this movie. It was so sweet and full of smart observations. The animation is beautiful, the story is wonderful, and the music is phenomenal. I knew that Jon Batiste was a big part of the soundtrack, but I didn’t realize that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - also known as Nine Inch Nails - was part of it too. It was a surprise to me; I don’t know that I would have imagined John Batiste and NIN scoring a Disney movie! It all worked, of course, and was really moving and completely fantastic.
There is a lot going on in this movie. It’s about a guy called Joe who finally gets his big break to be in a noted jazz quartet, but he fails to be “in the moment” and meets his end. On his way to the Light, he realizes what’s happening and makes a run for it, only to wind up in the Before with the pre-souls. Joe really wants to get back to earth, but he a mentor to soul 22 who has very strong ideas about NOT going to earth. Then there are the mystics, the lost souls, Terry the accountant, all the Jerrys, and of course Mr. Mittens...it’s all kind of glorious.
Watch Soul if you can. There was part that I missed while I was wrestling with my dog, so I’ll be checking it out again to see what I missed. Hopefully it won’t make me cry as much as it did today!
