1. February is Black History Month. My sister is doing an independent study of Black history and writing about what she learns on her blog. She has published three posts as of this writing, and all three have been interesting and informative. It boggles my mind a bit when I think back on history classes I took in junior high and high school. I remember learning a little about the big things like the various wars, but that's about it. Memorizing dates of "important" events isn't what history is about. Granted, it's been a long time since I was in high school, and I didn't have the need to take history classes in college (my business major didn't require history), but I think there are pretty big gaps in what we are taught in public schools. I applaud my sister for taking the time to learn and to share. Check it out by clicking here. Thanks Lizzie!
2. All the weather in one day. There's an old saying that if you don't like the weather in the intermountain west, wait five minutes and it will change. That saying has certainly been true for the past few days. Yesterday when I took the dogs for a walk in the morning before I went to the office, it was kind of warm, around 45 degrees, but there was cold wind out of the north. When I left for work about 20 minutes later, it was raining. A couple of hours later, it snowed. At noon I went out for lunch and the sun was shining. It wasn't warm, exactly, but it wasn't wet or windy. All of that kind of repeated itself today, but without the rain. So strange.
3. My meditation background sound is my mom's garden. I use the Calm app to meditate. One of the features is that there are nature sounds you can choose from as background for the meditations. The one I chose sounds like a running water and wind chimes. I didn't think about it at the time, but the other night as I was meditating before bed, I realized that it sounds just like the fountain in my mom's backyard and the windchimes she has hanging from the pergola. It made me smile. I pictured myself sitting on the swinging bench (Mom calls it the giling-galang) listening to the fountain and the chimes and feeling the sun warm my body. Super pleasant and a great way to wind down the day before bed. I think I'll go do that now.
Good night!
