#2527 three things: past, present, and future (books)

I thought it would be fun to switch things up a little and write about the book I just finished reading, the book I am currently reading, and the book that is coming up next. Let's go!

1. Past. The book my dog(s) destroyed was The Sanatorium by Sara Pearse. It was Reese's Book Club pick for February. As I mentioned in a previous post, the last 40 or so pages were more or less intact, so I was able to finish the book. The novel falls in the mystery/thriller category. The setting is a former sanatorium turned into a super luxury hotel high in the Swiss Alps. The main character, Elin, and her boyfriend, Will, are coming to the hotel to meet up with Elin's brother Isaac to celebrate his engagement to Laure. Elin is a detective back home in England, but she's on sabbatical because a case she worked on went wrong. Lots of things go wrong right from the start on this vacation. The hotel is modern and luxurious and a bit on the creepy side. People start to go missing. There's an avalanche that cuts off the hotel from civilization. Elin has to do detective work. I don't know that she had a lot of intuition with it though, because whenever she thinks she knows something, she winds up being totally wrong. There were lots of twists and turns, and to my thinking, not all of them made sense. It was just ok for me.

2. Present. One of the books I am currently reading (and am the closest to finishing) is Magic Lessons: The Prequel to Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman. First of all...I love Alice Hoffman. Pretty much all of her books delight me. She's written these Magic books, the first of which was Practical Magic. A movie with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman was made out of that book. Although it was written first, in the mid-nineties, Hoffman has expanded the story. The book I am reading right now, Magic Lessons, is the origin story that dates back to the first witch (spoiler!), Maria, in the 1600s. The story follows Maria and her daughter, Faith.

I think I will re-read what would be the second book in the series, The Rules of Magic, and then re-read Practical Magic. The fourth and final (?) book in the series comes out in the fall and is called The Book of Magic.

Yes, I am enjoying Magic Lessons a lot.

3. Future. I just received the next selection for #EkpesBookClub which I will be starting tomorrow or Saturday. It's called The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix. I don't really know anything about the book, but I skimmed the sleeve and I do know that it takes place in Charleston. I love books that are set in places I have visited. I think the book will be a fun read and I'm looking forward to diving into it.

It is a rainy, gloomy night here in Salt Lake City. It seems like the perfect night to snuggle in and do a bit of reading, and that's exactly what I'm going to do!
