#2623 Saturday with Sandy (6/30)

My dogs woke me up at 7:10. It was about an hour past their breakfast time, so I guess I'm glad they were patient, but even a dog's patience can wear thin, I suppose, especially when food is involved. I dished up the kibbles and unloaded the dishwasher while they ate, then, after a quick trip outside (for them), we all headed back to bed. I promptly fell back to sleep and woke up again shortly after 10:00.

I decided I needed a peppermint mocha to start the day, so I zipped over to Starbucks. After that, the day slowed down. I spent the next couple of hours reading so I could be caught up for the book club meeting at 1:00. We are reading Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead. I started the book earlier in the week, but hadn't made a lot of progress. Sometimes the first 100 pages of a new book are slow for me. Once I got to about page 75 or so, the action picked up and I am in it now.

The book club meets via Twitter. Usually the first discussion of a new book is kind of slow as we are getting to know the characters and the plot. This week's discussion was pretty lively, though. It seems like we are all enjoying the book. I'm glad about that, because I suggested it. The club has read two other Whitehead novels, The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys, so when I learned that Whitehead had a new novel, I immediately suggested to our leader, Ekpe, that we put it on our list.

Here's a cool thing: Colson Whitehead himself liked one of my tweets today! I know it's silly, but it's still pretty thrilling to me.

After book club, I thought about going to see a movie. I haven't seen the newest James Bond film, and thought it might be fun to see a movie and eat some popcorn. As I sat on my couch and looked around the house, though, I decided my time would be better spent with the vacuum and a dust rag. I spent the next hour or so cleaning the main floor and listening to an audio book. I'm listening to The Adventurer's Son. It's quite good. Engaging. I find it easier to listen to non-fiction than novels.

A bit later, I went to the grocery store and picked up some take-out for dinner. I finally got around to ordering Lizzie's birthday gift (!), and I think when I'm done writing here, I may climb into bed and - you guessed it! - read. I was up very late last night watching the Utes crush Stanford in college football. I sort of stayed up to the very end, even though I did doze off a few times. The score was 52 - 7, so it wasn't much of a contest.

Tomorrow, I must - MUST - trade out my lightweight clothes for my sweaters. There are a couple of other little tasks on my list for tomorrow, but if nothing else gets done, the clothing swap has to happen. It is getting cold over here and I need more than my light jackets.

Mom had her Covid booster on Thursday and it has laid her low. Sending healing, soothing thoughts her way. Another person I know said the booster was mean to her, too. I received a notice that I am eligible for the booster, and now I'm kind of afraid of it, to be honest. I mean, I'm gonna get it, and I hope that I'll be okay.

I hope you are enjoying the weekend! Stay safe.

Thanks for the good thoughts, I feel better. I heard that Moderna boosters are strong, but for Pfizer the boosters are not as bad, but I guess it depends on who you talk to. Then again it hits pretty hard but only lasts for a day or two.
