#1996 travel Tuesday and movie night

February is a great time to get out of SLC for vacation. The first time MT and I went on a big vacation was in February 2006. The Caribbean is a dandy place to go, but I'm sure there are other great locations, too.

I'm not going anywhere this month, or for a while. I only have about three days of vacation time available right now, so I've gotta hang out. Thankfully I have friends that are going on trips and I enjoy hearing about other people's vacations and living vicariously, so I'll be fine.

A friend from work is on his way to Kauai right now. He'll be on the island for ten days. He showed me the website of the place he is staying and it looks magnificent.

Another friend from work is going to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Saturday. I think it is her first trip to Mexico. She is going with friends and family and I'm sure she will have a wonderful time.

Finally, a third friend from work will be leaving for Iceland next week. Iceland in February? It sounds cold but the thought of seeing the northern lights is tempting. This will be my friend's second trip to Iceland and he is excited about it.

Another trip that I know also happens next week when someone near and dear to my heart travels to Taos, New Mexico to attend a writer's retreat.

Lucky friends!

One quick note before I sign off. MT and I saw another Best Picture nominated film tonight, "The Post".  I'm pretty sure that Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks are about as great as it gets when it comes to acting. Meryl Streep can make you believe she is the person that she is portraying and Tom Hanks is good all the time. The story is about the decision to publish the Pentagon Papers in the Washington Post in 1971. The New York Times had already published a story and an injunction was filed against the paper by the White House. The Washington Post was able to get the Pentagon Papers and Katherine Graham, the publisher of the paper, made the decision to publish the story even though her most trusted advisers were telling her not to do it. The growth we see in Graham as she changes from being the publisher's daughter, then the publisher's wife to the publisher who makes her own decisions was empowering and beautiful.

It was also hard not to draw comparisons between Nixon's treatment of the New York Times and the Washington Post and the current president's treatment of those same papers. Interesting.

"The Post" is a good movie and worthy of the nomination, but not THE best picture among the nominees, in my opinion. Glad I saw it. I just have three more of the Best Picture nominees to see and I will have completed my goal to watch all nine films. Maybe I'll see a movie this weekend.
