#394 best story of the day

I have a friend at work with an unusual name: Shalayre. It's pronounced shal-air. When I first met her, I asked about her name. She said her mom was watching the show "Romper Room" when she was pregnant and there was a little girl named Shalayre. Her mom liked it and named her baby after the little girl on the show.

By the way, "Romper Room" was a children's show in the 70's based in Salt Lake City, hosted by the lovely and kind Miss Julie. Miss Julie and the children would dance and sing and watch cartoons. I loved the show. Miss Julie had a magic mirror and at the end of the show she would say, "Romper bomper stomper boo, tell me, tell me, tell me do; Magic Mirror tell me today, did all my friends have fun at play?" (Or something like that; it's been awhile.) Then she would look into the magic mirror and she's say, "Shalayre had fun today. So did Sandy. And I see that Billy had fun, too."

Back to today. My friend Shalarye had a message from a lady named Shalayre. My friend said she'd never met another person with her name and she couldn't wait to call the lady back. When she called back this afternoon, I heard my Shalayre's side of the conversation. She explained to the other Shalayre that her mom named her after a girl on Romper Room.

You know what happens, right? The lady on the other end of the phone was the child on Romper Room!!! My friend's namesake!! How cool is that?!

It was my favorite story of the day.

I haven't forgotten about finishing my Mt Rushmore story. Maybe tomorrow.
