My friend Ryan came into my office today and noticed the postcards from Deadwood and Mount Rushmore that are hanging on my wall. He touched the Deadwood postcard and said it made him homesick. I know that his family lives in California, so I asked how he was homesick for South Dakota.
"I went to college in Rapid City," he said. That's when I remembered that he went to the South Dakota School of Mines. "Deadwood is just down the road from Rapid City," he told me. "And I used to work at Mount Rushmore. I've been on the noses. I drilled the noses to make sure they would stay in place and did maintenance and upkeep on the sculptures." How cool is that?! He told me some fun things about the place, like that the cave from the movie "National Treasure" actually exists and used to hold, well, national treasures. Wish I'd talked to him before we left! I bet he would have told us some interesting local stuff to check out.
In the meantime, I was telling my other friend Brian about our trip to Mount Rushmore. He'd been there a long time ago, and now he wants to take his son there.
