#1197 girls weekend + matinee: The Fault in Our Stars

Man...I had such a great weekend!

My BFF LA came down from Idaho to spend the weekend. Her husband had to work this weekend; MT and T went to the cabin in Idaho to do some preparations for the family reunion, so LA and I got to have some quality girl time!

A little background: I met LA when we both worked for the newspaper in Pocatello, and I started working there in the fall of 1988, so we have been friends for a pretty long time (nearly 26 years!) We are both damn proud of the fact that our friendship has continued even though for the past 18 years we have lived 165 miles away from each other. She's a great person and we have a lot of fun when we get to hang out together.

Before she arrived on Saturday morning, I had to take Osi to the vet. Her right front paw was all bloody and swollen. She had a abscess in her foot caused by a foxtail. EW! We go through it at least once every year. The vet removed the foxtail and found a few others, too. Now I am giving her some anti-biotics so she doesn't get an infection, but her foot looks a lot better.

On with the girls weekend story...

LA and I had three things we planned to do: shop, go to a baseball game and celebrate our birthdays. In the past few months, LA has become quite the snappy dresser. Inspired by outfits she found on Pinterest, she has restyled her wardrobe and come up with some good ways to be an efficient and effective shopper. This weekend I was her student. I am a lazy dresser. Jeans and a t-shirt are pretty much my standard and I feel sloppy and schlumpy. LA instructed me to make a list of things that I wanted to find, and she promised to help me put some outfits together based on what I wanted.

I think I have explained before that I am a gift card hoarder. I'm happy to say that my hoard of gift cards has significantly decreased after Saturday's shopping spree! I bought three skirts (skirts! waaaaaaaaaaaay out of my comfort zone), several tops, a couple of jacket-type items, one scarf and a pair of shoes. Of my own money, I think I spent around $60. When we laid everything out this morning, I think we had six or seven outfits that we put together just mixing and matching the skirts and tops. Of course I have lots of tops and trousers already that will also go with the stuff I bought. YAY! New outfit tomorrow :)

Before all that shopping happened, we needed some sustenance, so we went to lunch. She chose The Cheesecake Factory. I've only been there a couple of times because a) it's pretty expensive and b) it's not exactly in my neighborhood because it's at the mall so it was the perfect place to celebrate our birthdays. I was happy with my choice of food. I had a turkey, bacon avocado sandwich with a green salad from their SkinnyLicious menu. It was darn tasty! And it was the Cheesecake Factory, so after our shopping, we splurged and got a slice of cheesecake to bring home. I got the caramel pecan turtle flavor. Decadent!

We went to the Salt Lake Bees game in the evening. It was a beautiful night and we had excellent seats. We both love baseball, so it was fun to watch the game and chat and observe the people around us and comment on the game.

People-watching is fun. We saw a young couple in the throes of first love. They were always touching each other and smiling and the way he looked at her was pretty sweet. We saw family with a couple of young kids. At one point, the little girl was sitting on her dad's lap and she was talking to him and although we couldn't see his face, we could tell that he was smiling. She was trying to wink at him and it was damn adorable. There was also a couple behind us who must have been on a first date. They were older than the young couple in front of us. They were having the "getting to know you" conversation. The man talked without stopping for like, five innings. He was quite opinionated. The woman seemed interested, though. I don't know if they saw any part of the game.

Anyway, the Bees lost badly but it was still fun to be there.

This morning we both slept a little late (we were up late last night) then we went out for breakfast and chatted about how our work was going and how our kids are doing.  We made one last shopping stop at a store on the way home. I picked up a couple of things for the Mexico vacation. Then, before we knew it, it was time for her to go back to Poky. :( I was sad to see her go because it was way fun to hang out!

MT and T weren't home yet, so I decided to go see a movie. I went to see The Fault in Our Stars. I have read the book twice, so I knew what I was getting into, but oh my god. Watching these two lovely young people fall in love and go through their story on the big screen was an absolute tear-fest. I won't spoil it if you haven't read the book - which you should because it's amazing even though it will tear your heart out and rip it into little tiny pieces, but in a good way - but wow. Emotional. And sweet. I cried many times during the film. Sometimes I was afraid I was actually going to make some loud noises with my sobs. At one point I thought, "Why the HELL am I doing this to myself? It's not going to get any easier!" but I stayed 'til the end and I loved it even as my heart broke a little. Okay? Okay.

Now it's Sunday night and it's time for bed. It's past time for bed, but writing is so much fun that I lose track of the minutes.

I hope you all had a great weekend. Back at you on Tuesday :)
