#1217 my book-buying quirkiness

I realized something about myself tonight, and it's been on my mind for a couple of hours as I try to explain and rationalize the quirk to myself.

I really like to read. I have a couple of ebook devices (a color Nook and a paper-white Nook) and shelves of regular paper books. For gifts, people often give me Barnes and Noble gift cards; in fact, the year I bought my first Nook, I used mostly gift cards to pay for it.

There are several authors whose books I especially enjoy and I look forward to reading their new books when they are published. There are also plenty of books that I hear about that I think would interest me and I look forward to reading those as well.

Mostly I like to go to the library because I can usually find something that I want to read there. I have a pretty enormous list of books that I would like to read so that comes in handy in the library. I like the library because it's free and I'm cheap.

The library also has an on-line ebook program that I have used on occasion. I think it's hard to browse, though, because I often will choose a book based on it's cover. But the program is there and it's free.

As I've mentioned, I get gift cards to the bookstore that I can use at the physical store or online. I have a pretty nice balance on my account. There are at least three new books out from authors that I like (Jennifer Weiner, Elin Hilderbrand and Jojo Moyes).  I can afford it and I know I will be happy. The ebook is also less expensive than a physical book. Why don't I buy one or two? Or all three? Hell, I could afford it!

Because they are $11 or so and when I compare that price to other books that are $1.99 or $2.99, they seem expensive.

So I end up buying the cheaper books even though they weren't even on my reading list and I've never even heard of the book or the author. (Thankfully I can check out what other people think on Goodreads.com). They just sound interesting and the price is right. I have many of these cheap books on my Nook. Some of them are good and some are just meh.

What is the matter with me?

I think it goes back to the old, "I better hold on to this gift card because something might come along that I really want and then I'll have to use my real money to get it!" I'm such a dork!!

Maybe I'll give myself a little treat and buy at least one of the three books I want. But which one? That's also a question.  I want to make sure I have plenty of books on my Nook because pretty soon, this will be me:

Anyone got some advice to kick me out of my dorkiness?

:D

When I was using my Kindle I would look at book title's and couldn't pick out a book. Maybe it runs in the family. Some of the books I chose I couldn't put down, others were a chore to get through. In the end you have to figure it out for your self. Good luck and good reading.

I'm about to start the new Emily Giffin book "The One and Only", it has very poor reviews in Good Reads, we'll see.
