We had fun at the Eagles concert! Last night's show was the fourth or fifth time we've seen the band; we really like their music.
I didn't even know they were coming to town. My brother-in-law Kevin called MT and wanted to come to the show. That's why we bought the tickets. Sadly, my sister-in-law, Kevin's wife, got sick and they were unable to come up for the show. I ended up selling the other pair of tickets to a guy from work. He and his wife had always wanted to see The Eagles, so it worked out for everyone.
Here's what I learned last night: everyone gets older, but when you're rock idols show their age, it's a bit of a reality slap upside the head. I mean, I had the biggest crush on Don Henley 20 years ago or so, and now he just seems old to me. He still sounded good though. He nailed Hotel California and Desperado. Timothy B. Schmidt doesn't really have that high clear voice anymore, but he still sounded good. I actually thought Glenn Frey was showing his age the most. His voice wasn't as good as it used to be and he didn't move around very well either. The harmonies were still fantastic.
I think Joe Walsh is the best Eagle. He's just spectacular. His songs, the guitar playing, the playfulness he had with the crowd - the whole show was better when he was involved. He seems like kind a strange dude, but he was awesome. People were yelling, "You're my hero, Joe!" and "I love you, man!"
Here's another thing I learned last night: the crowd at The Eagles concert was considerably older than just about any other show I've been to in the last few years. MT and I were joking that my friend Abby might have been the youngest person there. She's in her early to mid thirties :) I did see a couple of kids, probably around 12 or so in the audience, so there's hope for future generations of Eagles fans.
It seemed like the arena was sold out. There were not a lot of empty spaces. Everyone was singing. Those are songs you know by heart, even if you haven't listened to them in a while. Those songs are solid. They are still great tunes.
The band played for nearly three hours. The first part of the show was really mellow. Henley and Frey were talking about the band's history, but it was edited. They never ever mentioned Don Felder. Oh well. In the second set, it was a lot more uptempo and Joe got the place rockin' a few times. During the first set, I wondered if we'd ever get up to move around. It was good music and sounded fine, but it wasn't like any of their previous shows we'd been to. The second set made up for that.
MT really enjoyed the show. He talked about how much fun it would be to follow the band around for a few shows. I don't know if I'd go that far, but I did enjoy the show and was glad to be reminded about their great music.
Now that I've written what I thought, here's the review from the Salt Lake Tribune. (I did not read the review prior to my writing this post.)
Now it's time for bed. We got home around midnight last night and my alarm went off way too early this morning. I'm packing around dark circles under my eyes, but it was worth it. Listening to live music is awesome!
