#1297 family movie night: Interstellar

Today the three of us, plus Trent, went to see the latest film by Christopher Nolan, Interstellar. T loves Christopher Nolan movies; I believe T thinks that Nolan is genius. I was kind of lukewarm about going to see this film because I don't care too much for science fiction/time travel movies, but I really felt like having some movie theater popcorn plus going to the movies seemed more fun than being at home.

In true sci-fi fashion, this film was a little out-there for me, but I liked it. The story takes place sometime in the future where the very existence of humans on earth is in a precarious predicament. The government has abandoned the military and is focusing on farming because the world has run out of food. Fortunately, NASA still exists in a super-secret-hush-hush NORAD facility that is found by Coop (Matthew McConaughey) and his daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy).

At NASA, Dr. Brand (Michael Caine) and his daughter Dr. Brand (Anne Hathaway) are working out ways to find new life-sustaining planets and they convince Coop, an engineer and pilot, to go on a mission to find the planets where previous expeditions have gone. Of course, going into space means they will be losing time on earth literally - on one of the planets they go to, every hour on the planet is seven earth years.

What happens late in the second hour of the film is pretty mind-bending, but Nolan brings it all together and the end result is an interesting, trippy movie with lots of cool effects and Matt Damon being a really bad guy. T loved it, Trent was a bit overwhelmed by it, MT thought Nightcrawler was a better movie and I was entertained and I enjoyed the popcorn.
