#1302 Joe-Joe madness and a kringle, too

Candy Cane Joe-Joe's are back at Trader Joe's!!

Joe-Joe's are Trader Joe's answer to Oreos. The candy cane flavored cookies are only available during the holidays, and they are pretty good so they are very popular. How popular are they? Let me tell you what I saw happening at my local TJ's yesterday.

There I was, roaming around the store and I went into the frozen food aisle. I noticed a small crowd in the area and I thought there was a sale on the orange chicken. But no...the crowd was for the candy cane Joe-Joe's.

There was a lady standing in front of the Joe-Joe's and her cart was nearly full to the top with boxes of these cookies. There were a few more people who were trying to get to the cookies, but the lady with the full cart was totally blocking the way and giving out dirty looks to anyone who was trying to get a box of cookies. I watched and tried to figure out how to get in there for a box. I waited patiently for the people to maneuver around the cookie lady; they were having a hard time deciding between regular and gluten free. They ended up with one box of each and suffered a withering glare from the cookie lady. I swear she had 100 boxes of cookies in her cart. If I'm lyin', I'm dyin'.

I got one box and got out of there and continued to wander around the store for a few more minutes only to find myself in line behind the cookie lady. I quickly got in the next line over, but I got to watch all the drama of the cookie lady paying for all those cookies. You see, they weren't all for her. Oh no. She was picking up Joe-Joe's for her sisters, too and insisted on splitting up the 100 boxes in at least three groups and paying for each group separately. There was a man who was next in line with just a hand basket with a dozen items or less. The cookie lady actually said, "I'm going to be awhile. You should probably find another line."

Just pay for the damn cookies, lady, and work it out with your sisters later! I'm on my lunch break - get out of my way!

Any feelings of holiday magic that were swirling in my heart were dashed away by the rude cookie lady. Kelsie heard the cookie lady say she was going to give a box of cookies to each of her neighbors with a note saying, "Ho Ho Ho! Here's a Joe-Joe!" or something like that.  Here's me, rolling my eyes.

And ok, the cookies are good, but they are not THAT good. I think it's the unique-ness and exclusivity of them that makes them seem more delightful and desirable.

Even though I did get a box of Joe-Joe's, my favorite purchase was the almond kringle. It's a big Danish pastry filled with almond paste in a flaky dough lightly iced. So tasty! I bought two - one to try to make sure it's suitable to share with my guests on Thanksgiving morning, and one to share with my guests on Thanksgiving morning. (heehee I knew it was going to be great!) I put one in the freezer and I'll pull it out and warm it up on T-day morning or maybe the day after. What a nice treat :)

Oh Trader Joe's! You never disappoint me!
