#1310 family movie night: Mockingjay

If you read this blog very much, you can't be surprised that we would be seeing this movie as soon as we could. The three of us do love when a movie is part of a series.

Mockingjay is the third book in the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins and like many film franchises, the final book in the series is split into two films. Tonight we saw Mockingjay Part 1; now we have to wait 363 days until Part 2 is released on November 20, 2015.

Before we went to the theater tonight, we watched the previous film, Catching Fire, here at home to refresh our memories and prepare for the new film. That was fun, too. We did a double feature.

I won't give anything away about this movie except to say that as far as I remember, it is fairly true to the book. It's been a couple of years since I read the books and I thought the third book was tough to read. It was difficult in a different way than the first two books for me. The whole concept of The Hunger Games is pretty disturbing and the first two books were about the Games themselves. In the third book, there is rebellion against the Capitol, complete with twists and turns and heroes and villains. Sometimes I found it hard to keep track of who was good and who was bad. Katniss is always good, though.

Part 1 sets that all up. There's a lot more Liam Hemsworth in this film and a bit less Josh Hutcherson. Jennifer Lawrence is in nearly every scene and she's great as always. T says that Effie wasn't part of the third book, and I don't remember (I actually thought she was in the book), but she is in the film and I was glad that she was in the film. She provides a bit of lightness to a pretty dark tale.

If you have seen the first two movies, go see this one by all means. Then sit back and count down the days until we get to see the conclusion of this franchise.

I'm seeing this tomorrow, so I'm glad to hear that it lived up to your expectations, even without the benefit of a complete narrative.
Part 2 should be the real showstopper!
