#1337 slow cooker Sunday: Hungarian goulash

I was surfing the interwebs the other day and decided to check out foodgawker.com. If you haven't been there, click the link and feast your eyes. I haven't gone there very often, but I think I'll add it to my regular rotation. I like pictures of food  and I'm always interested in finding new recipes to try, so this is a pretty cool site. While I was there, I found a recipe for goulash. I've never really thought that goulash would be good. For one thing, the name is very unappealing to me. But the picture looked appetizing and the recipe did seem like something I would like.

Of course, I was looking at the recipe on my desktop computer and not on my Chromebook and I couldn't find the recipe again and it seemed like a hassle to look it up on my desktop and blah blah blah so I went to Pinterest on my Chromebook/cookbook to see if I could find a good goulash recipe while I was making my shopping list the other day. I found this recipe, which is what I made today in my slow cooker.

Let me tell you about it. I followed the recipe (almost) exactly. Instead of using a can of whole tomatoes, I used crushed tomatoes, so the sauce was pretty soupy. (I just don't like the idea of canned whole tomatoes or really whole tomatoes in general.) I also added about six large white button mushrooms. I think a few cremini (baby portabella) mushrooms would have been better. I let it all cook on high for about five hours. The meat was extremely tender. The carrots were soft and sweet. I used smoky paprika and you could really tasty the smokiness. I served it over buttered noodles and I will say that it tasted really nice. MT seemed to like it a lot. He called it a "meat and potatoes" dish, even though there were no potatoes in this recipe. I found a similar recipe that used sausage and potatoes. I might try that one sometime.

I don't know if the dish was Hungarian-ish or not. I only know one person from Hungary and I've never discussed goulash with him. I don't know if serving over buttered noodles is a Hungarian custom or if that's a purely American thing. Most of the recipes for goulash I saw on Pinterest included elbow macaroni as a main ingredient. I didn't like the sound of that but then what did I serve it with? Noodles. OK, wide egg noodles, but still noodles.

I'm not very good at taking pictures of food, so I didn't bother to take any pics. T thinks it's weird when I take pictures of food, anyway.

Now it's 9PM and I'm going back to work tomorrow and I promised myself I would be in bed, lights out by 10PM every work night. I'm even thinking of doing an experiment with pre-sleep habits. You'll probably be hearing about it soon. I'm still working out how I'll do my experiment.

I hope you all had a nice weekend and a wonderful holiday season. I have unravelled my 2015 and I have a word to guide me and I'm ready to kick some ass this year! Talk to you tomorrow!
