#1983 bittersweet

I am back in the cold, snowy Rockies after five warm, balmy days in southern California. Many people at work asked how my vacation was, and the only word I could really think to describe the trip was "bittersweet."

The couple of days I spent with my sister in San Diego were great. We listened to live music, hung out with her friends, had some drinks and some good food and enjoyed each other's company. The time I spent with my mom for her birthday was wonderful, too. We did some surprise Christmas shopping, got the giggles after taking some silly photos, had some drinks and ate some good food and watched a beautiful sunset. That was the sweet.

Over all the sweet and good, though, was the bitterness of knowing that Dad is still in the hospital. He was moved out of ICU on Monday night, which is an improvement, but he still has a long tough row to hoe. It's hard to see him in the hospital like that. Tomorrow it will be two weeks that he has been there.

This holiday season is not shaping up to be very merry.
