I've mentioned that my sister is learning about Black history and writing what she learns on her blog. One of the topics she wrote about was Igbo Landing. It was the story of people being brought from Africa to Georgia. The would-be slaves rose up against their captors, then chose to return themselves to the water rather than be enslaved.
I was telling T about Lizzie's studies and mentioned this story in particular and he said that he had heard a similar story before from the rapper Lupe Fiasco. He said it had been a few years and he didn't remember all of it, but he did remember that the rapper put out an album about slavery and a similar story to Igbo Landing as it's theme.
This piqued my curiosity, so I Googled it. Sure enough, in 2018 Lupe Fiasco released an album called Drogas Wave. The rapper told Billboard magazine in April 2018, "It’s about a group of slaves on a slave ship on their way to Africa to the West Indies and they are thrown off the boat. But they didn’t die. They stayed alive and they lived under the sea. And they dedicated their lives to sinking slave ships -- so they became this super, underwater force against slavery." (from Wikipedia)
I didn't listen to the whole album, but I did listen to Lupe Fiasco Essentials on Apple Music. There were a lot of songs that I liked and that I have listened to a few times. I don't know that I would have happened upon his music if T hadn't steered m3 in that direction.
If you are so inclined, get yourself over to You Tube to check out a few of Lupe Fiasco's tunes. I recommend "All Black Everything", "Kick, Push", and "Daydreamin" featuring Jill Scott.
For now, here's Lupe Fiasco with "Old School Love" featuring Ed Sheeran. I like this video and I like this song. It's a mellow vibe. Happy Monday!
