When I wrote on Monday, I was torn between two different songs that have been playing on repeat in my head. I went with Adele on Monday, and today I’m going with Bruno, who we don’t talk about.
On Sunday, I watched the new Disney film, Encanto. I really liked the movie. I loved the colors in the animation and the characters. The animators do a beautiful job on hair. (Check out Moana for further evidence of animation hair mastery.) The story is about a family that is blessed with magical gifts. One woman can cure illness with her empanadas. Another woman has miraculous strength. The newest gift was bestowed on a little boy who can understand what animals say.
The main character, Mirabel, did not receive a special magical gift, so even though she is sad she doesn’t have a gift, she loves her family and celebrates all the gifts they have. One day she finds out that maybe her uncle, Bruno, either knows or has something to do with the reason she doesn’t have a gift. When she tries to find out more, her aunts declare, “We don’t talk about Bruno!” A truly catchy and awesome musical number ensues. All the music was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who himself was blessed with a magical gift for music. He has a style. “We Don’t Talk about Bruno” really showcases that style, in my opinion, and I like it.
