This afternoon, the three of us went to see Top Gun: Maverick. I was excited to see the movie because I really, really loved the original Top Gun. I bet I’ve seen it at least 20 times in the 36 years (!) since it came out, including last night in preparation for seeing the new film today. Truthfully, I liked Val Kilmer’s Iceman better than Tom Cruise’s Maverick character. I like older Tom Cruise better than younger Tom Cruise.
The new film starts out pretty much exactly like the original film did, on an aircraft carrier with shots of fighter jets taking off from and landing on the ship. Even the flight crew scenes were nearly identical, and so was the music and theme song - yep, “Danger Zone” is back!
After that, though, the movies were a lot different. There are a new crop of young hot shot aviators, including a woman, and a nearly impossible mission they are all training for under the tutelage of Maverick. There is a new woman interest for Maverick, and Iceman is now an admiral. The fun part is that Val Kilmer actually made an appearance in the film.
There was a lot of action in the movie, and I loved it. I smiled, I felt nervous and excited, and yes, I cried. I didn’t sob, but my eyes were definitely leaking. MT and T liked it, too.
After the movie, the three of us went to ‘Bout Time pub to have dinner and watch Game 7 of the NBA Eastern Conference finals between the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics. We watched the first half at the pub, then we came home and all three of us finished watching the game together here. It has been nice spending some time together.
