About this time last year, I started noticing all the motorhomes, fifth-wheel trailers, and pull-along trailers in the neighborhood. I had visions of getting a small pull-along trailer; something that could easily be towed by the pick-up. It would definitely have a toilet,a shower, and a big enough bed. I saw us driving up into the mountains, or out to the desert, or over to the coast to relax and be somewhere else for a few days. I even mentioned it to MT a few times as I pointed out what size trailer I thought would be good for us.
Somewhere along way, I noticed that most of the trailers and motorhomes didn't get out of the driveways very much. One neighbor finally took their big motorhome out. They were going to Yellowstone and also to the Oregon Coast. They were gone for a couple of weeks. There is a little family about five houses down from me that have a very large trailer. They took it out a couple of times last summer, and they have been out at least once this summer. I wondered if we would play with a trailer a few times the first year, then less and less the longer we had it, though we kept making payments on it. Then it was winter and I stopped thinking about it, especially after we started planning the trip we took in April.
One of my co-workers was looking at a Razor side-by-side - you know, those little dune-buggy type vehicles. The used one she saw was $9,000. It made me remember my trailer vision, and I thought that if a two seater side-by-side was $9,000, a trailer must be way more! I didn't even bother to look up the pricing.
I realized a few things. First, I don't really like camping, although maybe in a trailer it would be better than in a tent. Second, trailers can be a hassle. You have to have storage or parking for them. You have to make reservations at campgrounds. Towing them can be an adventure in itself, I've heard. Once you are there, it's kind of like being at home in that you have to clean up and cook and stuff. Not really a break, is it? The scenery is different. Finally, I would rather go somewhere far from home - islands, Europe, etc - than wrestle with a trailer. I could go somewhere really cool for $9,000.
Yes, I know that if I bought a trailer, I'd have it for awhile, and I could use it as often as I wanted, rather than spending all the money on a trip or two, or whatever. But I would rather see the world, I think.
Of course, I know there are some people who can do both. I am not that person, and I'm okay with it. If I really wanted to explore the trailer vacation option, my neighbor across the street has a nice-looking trailer that he rents to people. Maybe sometime we will give it a try. Probably not this year, though.
I have had the urge to smell pine trees lately. I imagined sitting in a camp chair in the cool of the forest, reading a book and having a picnic. Maybe MT and I will figure out a little afternoon excursion some weekend.

We will be up in the mountains on Saturday when we go to the Sundance Resort to see a concert. Maybe that will satisfy my urge to smell the pines.
