Last night, T and I had the good fortune to see Kendrick Lamar in concert at Vivint Arena. I was glad to go and hang out with my son, and I thought the show would be okay. T and I saw Kendrick 10 years or so ago, and I remember him being an energetic performer, but I don't remember much else about the show, except the venue (Saltair).
I can say that Kendrick has become a very good performer in the past 10 years. He's still energetic, and his catalog has grown. He was onstage for a couple of hours, rapping his face off, dancing around, and soaking up the ginormous amounts of love the crowd was directing at him. The energy in the arena was tangible and electric. Similar to what I have seen at hard rock concerts, the crowd, especially down on the floor in the pit, was bouncing and at top volume. There were many times that Kendrick would stop rapping, and the audience - including my son - would sing/rap the lyrics. It was incredible.
I enjoyed every minute. I stood up the whole time, smiling, dancing, and shouting out lyrics that I knew. I am glad I got to go! It was fun as all get out.
My most favorite songs are "King Kunta" and "HUMBLE". I was going to share them, but rap is not for everyone, and I'd rather have you stick around than get offended or put off by the lyrics and language. If you are so inclined, it is very easy to find these videos on YouTube. I love the beat on both of these songs. "King Kunta" is funk, and maybe you don't know this about me, but I really love funk. "HUMBLE" has a strong beat and the hook is, well, it's an earworm.
Here are a few pics I took at the show.
Yeah, that was fun!
Tomorrow night, I will experience a completely different vibe and musical genre. MT and I will go to Sundance Mountain Resort for another installment of the Bluebird Cafe concert series. We will pack up a couple of beach chairs (we call them concert chairs), and our jackets and spend a couple of hours in the great outdoors, listening to acoustic country music performed by the people who actually wrote the songs. It's a nice, relaxing evening, once you get down to the amphitheater and then back up to the car after the show. It's a bit of a hike, but it beats waiting for the bus to drive you around. The discomfort is brief (hahaha).
Now I have to get to bed. There were certainly not enough hours of sleep between the time I got to bed early this morning (12:30 am) and the time my alarm went off (5:30 am).
