We had SEP's tonight. That's what they call Parent-Teacher Conferences nowadays, doncha know. When last I met up with T's teacher, we talked about what a good student he is, but that he was having a bit of trouble in the behavior department. Nothing too bad, just some problems here and there.
The first thing out of Mr. P's mouth tonight was that he had seen vast improvement in T's behavior and that he was really proud of T's progress. What a great start, and it just got better. Five A's including three A+'s, and a B+. His citizenship scores improved from 3 (average, needs improvement) to 4's and 5's. They take some kind of test to measure how quickly they can read and T's score is extremely high. Not only can he read fast, he understands what he's reading. Based on another test, it was determined he is reading at a ninth grade level. (He's in fourth grade.) Excuse me while I wipe the drool off my chin. I'm really proud of him!
Of course that means reward for all of T's hard work. I pay him for his grades. I figure that school is his job right now and he should be paid if he is successful. A's have the highest value, $5, and B's are worth $3. After last term I decided to tie in the citizenship scores with the A's, so he gets a little bonus for that. The kicker is that he has to put 25% of the money he gets into his credit union account. Gotta build up that college fund. We can't let those brains go to waste!
Now that you are excited about T, let me tell you about the other man in the family. When MT got home last night he told me he was worried about taking off his shoe because he'd dropped "something really heavy" on his foot and he was afraid that he'd broken a toe. He winced as he pulled off his work boot. There was a spot of blood over the big toe. He gingerly peeled off his sock. And this is what we saw:
GROSS!!! (You can double click on the picture if you want more detail on the carnage.) I don't know that I need to say any more about it. It's just gross.
MT says that I'm not doing a very good job working on my empathy as I'm giggling, snapping pictures from every angle and exclaiming about how freakin' disgusting his toe looks. Oops. But look at it!
Ok, I'm sorry this isn't very nice, but I had to share. I will try to do better another day.
