#2235 three things: the shift, the longest week and three concerts

1. The shift. I have long thought that in every season there is one day when the weather shifts just slightly, subtly indicating that the seasonal change is coming. It doesn't mean we won't still have sweltering hot days in the summer or that there won't be any more snow in the winter, but the little shift I feel tells me differences are on the way.

I felt the summer/fall shift on July 30 when I was sitting outside having lunch with Kelsie and Nicole. The sky that day was overcast and the temperature was a good ten degrees cooler than it had been. Nicole was saying that after her son's birthday (July 24), she is ready for fall. I remember Kelsie and I both kind of laughed, but that night I remember thinking that the atmosphere felt different. Of course the next days were blasted hot, but I still believe that there was a tiny little shift. I'm not quite ready for summer to be over, but the cooler temps we had today and that are forecast for next week are very welcome.

2. The longest week. Every morning this week when my alarm has gone off I have thought it was the next day. Like on Monday morning, I thought it was Tuesday. Today I was sure it was Friday. Many of my co-workers felt the same. Perhaps it is because our month-end close was interrupted by the weekend. We have a four-day close process. The first two days were last Thursday and Friday and the second two days were Monday and Tuesday. Monday and Tuesday were crazy busy; Wednesday was more quiet and today was just long. And I still have to go to work tomorrow!

For me, I think the seeming long-ness of the week also had to do with the fact that I had a concert on Sunday which is kind of unusual. Maybe that show threw me off.

3. Three concerts. Speaking of the concerts, let's recap who I saw and heard this week.

On Sunday I saw Umphrey's McGee. They are a straight-up jam band which means a little bit of singing and a whole bunch of guitar playing. Mostly that is not my favorite style. They are a very good band and I could tell that the crowd was really into it. Most everyone was dancing the whole time. I was not dancing. Maybe this is rude, but I was reading. It was the perfect music for reading. I wasn't keen on sitting there watching the dudes play guitar although I did enjoy listening. I couldn't recognize any of the songs they played with with what I had listened to on Apple Music. I checked out out their setlist, though (setlist.com is awesome!) and recognized the name of a song. If you want to hear a sample of their music, check out "Frankie Zombie".

Last night (Wednesday) I saw Mandolin Orange. I'd listened to some of their music on Apple Music and I wasn't sure how much I would like it. They are super mellow. You know what though? I really liked them live. They sounded great. The woman plays the guitar and the fiddle (not at the same time of course!). The man plays the - you guessed it! - mandolin. They both sing separately and together. The harmonies are superb. If you're interested, listen to "The Wolves",  "Lonesome Whistle" and/or "There Was a Time". It was perfect music for a gorgeous summer evening at Red Butte Garden.

Tomorrow night I will see O.A.R. I first heard of this band from my friend Nicole and I got to see them last year at RBG. I thought they were good and I'm looking forward to seeing them again. I'll let you know how they were the next time I write on Saturday.
