#2369 the house guest

Meet Gidget the kitten. She is our guest for the next few days. Her people are moving into a new place, but the place isn't available until next week, so her people are staying with their people and their people don't like cats. So we get Gidget.

It was not a smooth start. Gidget is a little neurotic. She got here yesterday evening and mostly hid under the couch. I believe she may be partially made of rubber because my couch does not have much clearance from the ground. I was already in bed when MT came upstairs to get to bed. He said the cat was "slinking up the stairs". I laid there for a minute, then I heard T go into the bathroom, but I didn't hear him close his bedroom door. I knew his window was open because we were having a nice cool night, so I closed his door. I was worried that Gidget might try to escape through the window.

This morning there was no sign of the cat. I wasn't surprised because, as I mentioned, she is a neurotic little beast who likes to hide. MT looked for her under the couches, but didn't see her. I meowed a few times and looked around for her, but didn't see her. I wasn't too worried about it. She had been in her litter box, so I was pretty sure she was around somewhere.

When a few hours passed and I hadn't seen her, I wondered if she was hiding out in T's room, so I went up to ask him. He had been asleep, but sat straight up and with a panicked expression jumped out of bed to look for Gidget. He couldn't find her. We were both stressed out about it. I was 99% sure she was in the house somewhere, but there was that 1% that I was worried about. Maybe she did get out through the window and had jumped off the roof. No way she would survive that, so I walked around the house looking for a body. Nope. That's good, right? But where the hell was she?

T went back to bed. He didn't want to call his friends and tell them he'd lost their cat on the first night.

I worked at the dining room table all day. I never saw the cat. I did meow a bunch of times throughout the house. The cat is vocal and will respond when you meow. A few times I thought a heard an answering meow, but it was probably just wishful thinking.

Gidget's people came over a little after 5:00. T had finally called them to confess that the cat was missing. The people (Jess and Derek) brought over some toys and treats to entice Gidget from her hiding place. They pretty quickly found her hiding in the box springs of the guest room bed. She wasn't trapped; she came out of her own free will. Damn critter. I'm sure she was scared and freaked out about being in a new place, but sheesh! What a crappy house guest!

Since then she has been exploring the house, meowing her head off, and basically being a cat. She's a cute little thing. You'll probably hear more about her and see more pics over the next few days, that is, if she sits still long enough for me to take a photo of her.

Happy May.
